5 Ways to Enhance Your Solo Trip

If you’re new to solo travel, it may be hard to resist the urge to stay to yourself when traveling, especially if you’re an introvert like me. You may even be glued to your phone when you’re out eating and what not, trying to avoid the unknown. But that defeats the purpose of the trip! You wanted to go. You took the leap. This vacay is for you. Act like it. I’ve listed 5 ways to be during solo trips that will definitely enhance your experience.

Be Adventurous

Book a thrilling tour. Take the scenic route. Step outside of your comfort zone. When I travel solo, I try to do things I wouldn’t normally do at home and something I’ve never done before. So go zip lining, parasailing, hiking, rock climbing, jet skiing or whatever is new and exhilarating. Be fearless. Challenge yourself beyond your wildest expectations.

Be Social

I know it’s almost ironic to say be social when promoting solo travel but you can socialize with strangers! Stay in a hostel and meet other solo travelers or other interesting people. Again, book a tour and get to know some folks from different places. Spark up a conversation with the locals. Try learning the local language. Even if you cant speak the language fluently you will likely find that kindness is universal. Most people are genuinely kind and want to help you. You’ll be surprised at the friendships that could emerge.

Be Realistic

We often dream of faraway places and the amazing things we could encounter there. These thoughts may come with unrealistic expectations. Although you should be adventurous, understand that every day of the trip may not be epic. It’s ok to spend a day doing nothing or just exploring. Relaxing is a part of vacation too. Also remember that since you’re solo you will be making all decisions and therefore solving all problems that may arise. So think ahead and be proactive. That includes researching the destination and being prepared.

Be Adaptable

Don’t be uptight! When you’re in a different country or state, everything won’t be like what you’re used to at home. It’s important that you adapt to your surroundings and just go with the flow. Be flexible and able to adjust to new conditions. This is not the time to stick to a strict schedule or agenda. It’s the time to let your hair down. Not that you shouldn’t plan but what I’m saying is don’t be so stuck to that plan that if something goes wrong your whole day is ruined. Be easy. Be resourceful and make the best of what you have. Go where the locals go. As the old saying goes – when in Rome, do as the Romans. Also, speak the language. Grab a translation book or download an app to help you speak and interact with the locals.

Be Careful

A common concern of solo travel is safety. This is especially true for solo female travel. Everyone wonders if it’s safe to go to that country or place? Should I do this alone? The answer is normally yes. However, I will also give my lawyer answer – it depends. It depends on the area you stay in, your preparation,  your health, and even the time of year you go. Always be aware of your surroundings. Familiarize yourself with the nearest police station, U.S. embassy, and hospital. Plan how you will get from the airport to your hotel and around town. Bring a portable charger to keep your phone charged all day in case of emergency. I know initially solo travel can be scary. But your biggest fears often never come to pass and life is too short to live it afraid.

Now that you know some ways to be while solo traveling, I hope you will be confident in planning your first or next solo trip and make the most of it.
