7 Solo Things to do in Orlando without Stepping Foot in a Theme Park

Orlando, Florida is considered the tourist capital of the world. It’s known for its major theme parks and family-friendly attractions. But sunshine and theme parks are only the tip of the iceberg in Orlando. Its other activities are plentiful and less expensive than a day with Mickey Mouse but can be just as fun and memorable. You may also be in Orlando solo due to a convention or work conference. Because of the large amount of things to do here in the City Beautiful, I’ve compiled a list of what I consider the 7 best things to do in Orlando without going to a theme park, even when flying solo.

  1. ICON 360

The Icon 360, formerly known as the Orlando Eye, is a massive, 400-foot ferris wheel that overlooks Orlando and surrounding areas. In fact, it is the tallest observation wheel on the east coast of the United States.  It’s located off International Drive, a very popular tourist area that’s close to the convention center and many major hotels. It features a 23-minute ride around the wheel in an all-glass capsule.

Solo travelers can purchase a private capsule or ride with possibly up to 14 others in one capsule. In my experience, I haven’t been asked to ride with more than three other people. It’s not too awkward since there is so much to see. There’s also a screen that provides details and information on some places you can see from the wheel. This attraction is a cool, quick, inexpensive thing to do when you have free time in Orlando.

ICON Orlando 360 is the main attraction in a complex that also features Sea Life Aquarium, Madame Tussauds Orlando, and Skeleton: Museum of Osteology. But that’s not all. Just outside of these attractions are at least a dozen bars and restaurants, including one of my favorites, the Sugar Factory https://sugarfactory.com/location/orlando/. You don’t want to leave without going to the central courtyard to see the choreographed water displays, live entertainment, and vendors.

An adult ticket is $27.99 at the time of this writing. A Florida resident ticket is $19.99. Parking is free! You can also purchase packages that include the Icon plus Sea Life Aquarium and Madame Tussauds. Tickets for children ages 3 -12 are $5 cheaper. You can also add a quick meal for $7 more or a full service meal for $17 more.

2. Helicopter Rides

For the thrill seekers out there, another exciting way to see Orlando without stepping into a theme park is to fly over a theme park. International Heli-tours is another quick and affordable way to experience the City Beautiful. Tour packages start at just $35.  It will definitely get your adrenaline going. This is also a great solo attraction that will make your trip fun and memorable.

3. Pointe Orlando

Another one of my favorite places in Orlando is the Pointe Orlando entertainment complex. Conveniently located on International Drive near the convention center, it houses some elite hot spots such as B.B. Kings, Improv Orlando Comedy Club, Blue Martini, and the Main Event. You can even catch a movie at the Regal Cinemas movie theater located upstairs. Parking in the garage is by the hour. However, your parking may be comped or reduced if you’re there to see a movie or see a comedy show. Ask at each establishment if they cover parking.

Dine at fine establishments such as Cubre Libre, Copper Canyon Grille, Maggiano’s Little Italy, or Capital Grille. I often see a comedy show and dine at Improv Orlando where the Fat Fish Blue restaurant services the club’s guests. I have seen comedy greats such as John Witherspoon, Sheryl Underwood, Arsenio Hall, Tommy Davidson, D.L. Hughley, and Monique.

4. Disney Springs

This bustling local attraction is filled with shopping, dining, and entertainment as well. The parking is free but the shops are not. When frequenting this lively place formerly known as Downtown Disney, I tend to stick with my norms; T-Rex Café, Rainforest Café, or a dine-in movie at AMC. But those are just a few of the unique attractions showcased at Disney Springs. Check out the House of Blues, the Lego Store, and many other fine retail stores and restaurants.

Disney Springs is not as close as the other attractions listed here but is likely an affordable Uber ride away from your hotel.

5. CityWalk

CityWalk is Universal Orlando’s vibrant city scene filled with similar shopping, dining, clubs, and movies. It is located just before the entrance to the two theme parks on Universal’s grounds. There is no entry fee, but parking will cost $20 unless you go after 6 p.m. when the fee is discounted. Here, I find myself at the infamous Bob Marley restaurant and nightclub or catching a movie at AMC. Save money and get the city pass. It includes the clubs and a meal. This pass usually goes for $21.00 but if you click here, you can get it for only $19. Or if you already ate, you can just get the CityWalk Party Pass that usually sells for $12 for only $6 here.

Try a meal at Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Company or make your own whopper at Burger King’s whopper bar. This place is like entertainment on steroids and can get very crowded since the theme park crowds tend to spill into City Walk upon their exit.

6. Malls and Outlets

From the Mall at Millenia to the Florida Mall to the Premium Outlets, there is no shortage of shopping in Orlando. You can find a deal at the outlets, located at the very north end of International Drive or the south end as well. But if bargains aren’t what you’re looking for, try the Mall at Millenia, which has several high-end stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Tiffany’s, Neiman Marcus, and more. Then, there is the tourist favorite; the Florida Mall, located off Sand Lake Road and Orange Blossom Trail. All have free parking but good luck finding any. If pressed for time, leave early to find a spot.

7. Dave and Busters

Finally, this oldie but goodie sits off International Drive in the same convention center area. It’s my solo go-to spot for happy hour and a good time. It’s a nice mix of casual with an upscale feel. Happy hour starts at 3:45 p.m.  Have a seat at the bar and order a nice, strong drink and appetizer for the low. Then, hit the arcade or watch some sports. It’s a good time.
